Terms of Use & Legal Notice

1. The service

InspectFiles is a free collection of browser-based tools for inspecting and verifying files. There is no account, no payment, and no subscription. By using the site you agree to these terms; if you do not agree, please do not use it.

The tools run entirely on your own device. We do not receive, store, or process the files you inspect. See the Privacy & Cookie Policy for what data the site does collect.

2. What these tools do not do

InspectFiles is not a security product and must not be relied on as one.

  • It does not scan for viruses, malware, or any other malicious content.
  • It does not determine whether a file is safe to open. A file that passes every check here can still be harmful.
  • Type detection reads a file's leading bytes. Those bytes can be forged, and some formats (particularly plain text) cannot be identified reliably at all.
  • MD5 and SHA-1 are provided only for compatibility with systems that still publish them. Neither is cryptographically secure, and neither should be used to establish that a file is authentic or unmodified by a motivated attacker.
  • Metadata stripping re-encodes images to drop embedded metadata. It is not a sanitisation guarantee, it does not cover every format (PDFs are not supported), and it may alter image quality.

Always exercise independent caution with files from sources you do not trust, and use dedicated security software where that matters.

3. No warranty

The site is provided free of charge, “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or uninterrupted availability. We do not warrant that results produced by the tools are correct or complete, or that the site will be free of errors or defects.

4. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential loss, nor for loss of or damage to data, arising out of your use of this site or your reliance on results it produces.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited. In particular, this section does not affect liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, for wilful misconduct or gross negligence, or any mandatory rights you have as a consumer under the law of your country of residence.

5. Acceptable use

You are responsible for the files you inspect and for having the right to inspect them. Do not use the site to process material you are not entitled to access, and do not use it to attempt to attack, overload, or interfere with the site or its hosting.

The “load from URL” option is executed by your own browser, which fetches the address you supply directly. Choosing what to fetch, and complying with the terms of whatever you fetch it from, is your responsibility.

6. Intellectual property

The InspectFiles name, site design, and source code are owned by the operator and are not released under an open-source license. The site bundles third-party open-source components, each under its own license, listed at /licenses.

7. Changes and governing law

We may update these terms as the site changes; the “last updated” date above always reflects the current version. Continued use after a change means you accept the revised terms.

These terms are governed by the laws of Italy. If you are a consumer resident in the EU or EEA, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory consumer law of your own country of residence, and you may bring proceedings there.

8. Provider identification

Information provided pursuant to Art 5 of Directive 2000/31/EC, as implemented in Italy by Art 7 of D.lgs. 70/2003:

The operator's full name and registered address are available on request from privacy@inspectfiles.com.
